Luxury Living with Kids and Dogs: Balancing Comfort and Elegance

Hello fellow design enthusiasts! I’m Jennifer Fisher, the proud owner and principal designer of J.Fisher Interiors. As a single mom to a lively 10-month-old and the keeper of three medium-sized “monster” dogs (who love nothing more than perching on the back of the sofa to watch the neighborhood parade by), I understand firsthand the challenge of creating a home interior design that’s both visually luxurious and comfortably functional. And let me tell you, it’s quite an adventure!

I’m embarking on a new journey myself as I just purchased a new house that’s in dire need of a serious home renovation and design magic. Today, as I’m thinking about how to transform this space into my luxury dream home and keep it from being destroyed little by little, I felt compelled to share some insider tips on home interior design ideas to guide you on how to transform your home into a haven for your family and beloved dogs kids while still exuding that Austin luxury interior design vibe.

  1. Blend Comfort and Elegance: Opt for outdoor fabrics for your furniture upholstery. The outdoor fabric industry has really come a long way in recent years. Designed to withstand stains, moisture, and fading, these fabrics are perfect for households with children and pets. With a wide range of colors, textures, and patterns available, you want velvet? They’ve got options! You want that leather look? They’ve got just what you’re looking for. You can infuse your space with personality while ensuring durability and easy maintenance. This ensures that your home remains stylish and sophisticated without sacrificing comfort or practicality.
  2. Invest in Industrial Carpet Cleaner: With little ones and furry friends roaming around, accidents are bound to happen. Investing in an industrial-grade carpet cleaner can be a game-changer for maintaining your rug’s pristine condition. It’s a worthwhile investment that keeps your carpets looking fresh and clean, no matter what messes come your way. Just make sure your carpet isn’t colorfast! I recommend seeking guidance from a professional carpet cleaner before you fire up that engine.
  3. Create your perfect rug from wall-to-wall carpet: Save that vintage oushak rug for your bedroom and consider creating a rug from wall-to-wall carpeting for the living spaces. Not only is it made to be cleaned regularly, but you can make it almost any size you want. It’s a much more affordable option that custom handwoven rug and most importantly, it’s more durable to pet accidents and toddler potty training poop trails.
  4. Incorporate Fun and Functional Sofa Covers: One of my favorite tricks for adding a pop of color and personality to my living space while protecting my furniture is fun sofa covers. Brands like Paw.com offer waterproof covers in vibrant hues. I’ve got a few of their flokati looking designs that I LOVE and they are perfect for families with kids and pets. Plus, they’re easy to remove when guests come over, ensuring that your sofas stay looking pristine and inviting.. just in time for your drunk friend to spill red wine on it… But, fear not! Remember, you opted for that outdoor velvet your favorite Texas interior designer recommended. You’re welcome!
  5. Maximize Storage: With little ones comes an abundance of toys, books, and miscellaneous clutter. To maintain a clutter-free environment, invest in stylish storage solutions that blend seamlessly with your home’s aesthetic. Think ottomans with hidden compartments, built-in shelving units, and decorative baskets that double as storage bins. These work great until they’re teenagers and they start hiding their weed in their old toy box… (channeling our favorite local Austin celebrity and fellow design enthusiast, Matthew McConaughey character, Wooderson, right now when I say…) alright, alright, alright, but let’s not worry about that now.
  6. Incorporate Pet-Friendly Design Elements: Don’t forget about your furry companions when designing your home! Lil’ Bow Wow needs a designated pet-friendly zone with a cozy bed and/or blanket to lounge on. Consider incorporating built-in feeding stations or storage solutions for pet supplies to keep your space organized and clutter-free. And don’t worry – with the right design choices, your home can still look stylish and chic while catering to those little monster’s needs.
  7. Create Kid-Friendly Zones: Designate specific areas of your home for your children to play and explore freely. Incorporate kid-friendly elements like low-to-the-ground furniture, soft rugs, and interactive toys that stimulate their imagination. By creating designated zones, you encourage independence and creativity while maintaining the overall harmony of your home. I don’t know why I didn’t put this one first because it’s so important, but at least it’s not last.
  8. Prioritize Safety: Safety should always be a top priority when designing a family-friendly home. Anchor heavy furniture to the wall to prevent tipping, install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs, and use cordless window treatments to eliminate choking hazards. Don’t forget to attach loose cords to the backs of furniture or affix them to the baseboards to make it harder for those tiny magic hands to grabs them also! You’ll also want to choose non-toxic finishes and materials to create a healthy environment for your family. Additionally, opt for furniture with rounded edges to mitigate the risk of accidents, especially in homes with young children. Round coffee tables, rounded legs on tables, ottomans, and side tables not only enhance safety but also lend a soft and inviting aesthetic to your space.
  9. Seek Professional Guidance: Navigating the world of interior design can be overwhelming, especially for busy parents. That’s where I come in!
