Getting ready for the season ahead isn’t just about swapping out our wardrobes and trying new recipes—it’s about infusing our home with design choices that reflect the change in the weather too.

For fall, it means welcoming warmer hues to reflect nature’s transition and help prepare our homes for cozier times ahead. Here are the powerhouses of fall colors this year—the trendiest interior design hues worth dipping into.

Cool Gray

Peek into any doctor’s waiting room or corporate office and you’re likely to see these hangers-on still going strong. But Benjamin Moore’s color of the year—Metropolitan—is a sleek, modern, and effortlessly cool twist on a brown-based neutral.

With a sophisticated and comforting softness, this cool-tone gray rewrites the idea that gray is depressing or bland. It’s light enough to use on walls for an understated and soothing alternative to white, but it also works well as a neutral to tone down other bright colors around it.

Hunter Green

Because Night Watch and other similar deep greens have such an intense hue, they should be reserved for larger rooms with plenty of natural light, if you plan to use them on interior walls. Otherwise, their richness can overpower a small room and make it look darker, especially without natural light. A deep hunter green works best for an accent wall, or even as a luxurious pop of color for textiles, smaller furniture, or even your front door or shutters.

Terracotta

Use Cavern Clay or other terracotta to imbue any room with a deep-rooted elegance and sunny warmth to outshine brown-based neutrals. It works best as wall paint or for sculptures, tiles, and other earthenware. It can also make soft furnishings the perfect spot to watch the fiery leaves turn outside your window this autumn.

Mustard
