Electra Remodel

Electra Remodel

Overview:

Electra Remodel is a comprehensive residential renovation of a 2,000-square-foot, mid-century style home in Austin, Texas. Completed in 2019 over the course of approximately one year, the project focused on rejuvenating a 1971 residence by reimagining the kitchen, renovating all bathrooms, upgrading floors, and enhancing the home’s overall flow. The goal was to honor the home’s mid-century character while improving functionality and ensuring a welcoming, stylish environment.

Project Goals:

The owners sought to transform a dated, impractical layout into a space suited for modern living. They enjoyed cooking together, yet the existing galley kitchen offered limited room for two people to work comfortably. Beyond creating a more open, collaborative kitchen, the clients also wanted to refresh the primary suite, upgrade materials throughout, and restore the home’s mid-century charm.

Design and Implementation:

  • Layout/Structural Changes: Removing a wall in the kitchen required adding a supportive beam. This allowed the design team to open the space and create an island-centric kitchen layout, enabling two cooks to work side-by-side comfortably. The bathroom layouts were refined, and new flooring was installed throughout.
  • Materials and Finishes: High-quality, mid-century-inspired materials guided the selection. Acacia wood floors brought warmth to the living areas. In the kitchen, walnut cabinetry and terrazzo flooring lent authenticity and character, reflecting the home’s era. Careful consideration of finishes ensured that the overall aesthetic aligned with the home’s mid-century roots while feeling fresh and updated.
  • Key Elements:
    • Open-Concept Kitchen: Removing the peninsula and adding a large island fostered a functional, inviting workspace. An appliance garage concealed small countertop appliances, maintaining a clean, uncluttered look.
    • Revitalized Primary Suite and Bathrooms: Modern fixtures, thoughtfully chosen tiles, and updated layouts improved daily comfort and convenience.
    • Harmonious Material Palette: The combination of wood, terrazzo, and mid-century-inspired cabinetry achieved the desired blend of classic style and modern sophistication.

Challenges:

  • Flooring Height Alignment:
Aligning flooring materials proved challenging due to variations in thickness between existing surfaces and the chosen finishes. By selecting more suitable materials and adjusting the design, the team ensured smooth transitions and a cohesive look.

Solutions:

  • Adjusting Material Choices:
After exploring options, using wood in certain areas allowed for seamless alignment with the terrazzo in the kitchen, achieving the desired mid-century feel without sacrificing practicality.
  • Collaborative Client Meetings:
Regular design sessions with the client ensured that all decisions, from cabinet finishes to tile selections, maintained the mid-century vision and met functional needs.

Outcome:

The Electra Remodel successfully transformed a once-outdated home into a modern, functional space that honored its mid-century heritage. The open-concept kitchen improved workflow and enhanced the overall living experience, while the refreshed bathrooms elevated daily routines. The end result exceeded the client’s expectations, combining practical updates with a design aesthetic that felt both timeless and personal.

Client Feedback and Satisfaction:

The client expressed enthusiasm for the final outcome, praising the improved functionality, cohesive style, and attention to detail. Positive testimonials, including video feedback, highlighted the project’s success in meeting and surpassing initial goals.

Documentation:

High-quality photographs, floor plans, and before-and-after images document the transformation, illustrating the dramatic improvements to layout, finishes, and design coherence.

Future Considerations:

While no immediate future work is planned, the project serves as a model for renovating mid-century homes with sensitivity to original style and an eye toward modern functionality.
