How Interior Design Affects Mood

How Interior Design Affects Mood

You don’t have to be a neuroscientist or psychologist to know that the way your space looks and functions affects your mood. And that’s what makes interior design not just an art, but a science too. After all, mental wellness is about more than just indulging in a relaxing massage or sipping frosé with your friends at Barton Springs—although the latter is obviously essential.

True wellness is also about creating and living in a space that nourishes your body and mind. Keep reading to find out how to lift your mood by turning your space into a wellness retreat.[vc_single_image image=”1769″ img_size=”570×360″]

Try Biophilic Design

We humans have an inherent tendency to seek connections with nature. It calms and inspires us, boosts our productivity, and contributes to a stronger sense of well-being. And that connection to the natural world is what biophilic design is all about.

Find ways to bring the outdoors in and create a home environment that integrates natural elements as much as possible. Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Don’t skimp on the plants. These natural air filters reduce allergens and increase the quality of the air we breathe, making us feel happier and more productive. It’s easy to add them to every room of the home, from herbs on the windowsill, to humidity-loving plants in a windowless bathroom, to a tall rubber plant or dwarf orange tree in the most-used room of your space.
  • Learn about feng shui. Want to feel more centered? The ancient practice of feng shui celebrates the natural elements of earth, water, wood, metal, and fire to create balance and harmony in a space. Here’s what each element represents and how to incorporate them in your home:
    • Metal(precision, simplicity, and clarity): Use mirrors or metallic colors to infuse your home with these energies. You can also add windchimes or a copper metal planter.
    • Fire(passion, inspiration, and expression): Add some clay or brick red pillows. Add candles, candle lighting, or a torchiere lamp. If you don’t have the proper ventilation for a real fireplace, a ventless fireplace is also a great option.
    • Wood(health, vitality, and growth): Add a fiddle-leaf fig tree to your favorite room. Try forest-printed wallpaper, and look for furniture with wood elements.
    • Earth (nourishment, stability, and support): Give your white walls a makeover with a warm sandy color or a rich terracotta. Use seagrass baskets for storage, and plug in a Himalayan salt lamp on your nightstand.
    • Water(wisdom, intuition, and fluidity): Water fountains are a beautiful addition to a space, and the sound of a fountain is calming and soothing. They can also help to humidify the air in your home. Angling a mirror to reflect the water source will double the energy of the water element in your home.

Bring on the Light

Affecting a range of conditions from seasonal affective disorder to insomnia, lighting has a huge impact on our well-being. Sunlight has been shown to improve productivity, alertness, and mood — and the lack of it can wreak havoc on our bodies and minds.

When your space is low on natural light, there are some creative ways to give your health and wellness a light-based boost. Try artificial skylights, which mimic sunlight, color-changing bulbs, or even Dawn-to-Dusk lamps, which “rise” and “set” like the sun.[vc_single_image image=”1772″ img_size=”570×360″]

Use Color Wisely

The right color can either overstimulate or under stimulate your space, and decades of research confirm that colors consistently evoke certain emotional responses. Neutrals—such as brown, white, gray, and black—establish a balance when you’re using passive and active colors. Passive colors—think greens and blues—are cool and can calm the mind and improve mental focus. On the other hand, active colors such as oranges, pinks, and yellows excite the mind, boosting energy and creativity.

Evaluate the colors in each room of your home. Does your bedroom promote a sense of calm and relaxation? Does your home office feel infused with creativity and innovation? Even something as simple as a new coat of paint can have a major impact on your well-being.
