Mastering the Art of Elegant Home Decor: Expert Tips and Tricks

When I’m fresh on a project, homeowners tell me their mood improves significantly when their living space feels organized – beautiful, clean, and uncluttered.

Still, many also say they struggle to achieve that elusive “designer look” they see in magazines.

Honestly, that’s hard to accomplish when you don’t do this pretty much every day.

After transforming hundreds of Austin homes in my 20 years at J.Fisher Interiors, I’ve built plenty of luxuriously livable spaces.

And I’ve learned a few tricks along the way – including that spending a small fortune or following rigid design rules are rarely the best ways to go about it.

Even if your Pinterest board tells you otherwise!

In this post, I’ll impart some of the wisdom I’ve gained through trial and error over the years about elegant home decor – and explore how to design an interior that has plenty of depth, warmth, and personality.

1. Warm, Statement Lighting Changes Everything

Lighting accounts for so much of a room’s perceived elegance.

For instance, we shifted our lighting strategy with our Westlake Her Place project and managed to create depth, dimension, and warmth in all the right places.

Illuminating the wine cellar, for instance, brought it to life. Courtesy of lighting alone, it was suddenly more central and visible.

It brought the whole space together – everything in its place, making the home that much more cohesive.

The Temperature Makes the Difference

I’d recommend choosing bulbs in the 2700-3000K range for that golden, welcoming glow.

White light has its place – but more often than not, it’s just abrasive.

Research from the Lighting Research Center shows that warm light temperatures reduce stress and create feelings of comfort.

Cool white bulbs might be energy-efficient, but they can make your carefully chosen colors look harsh and unwelcoming.

In short – think candlelight, not hospital corridor.

Layer Your Light Sources

In our recent Mid-Atlantic project, we combined:

  • A modern bulb chandelier (ambient lighting)
  • A Lutron system with adjustable smart lighting (task lighting)
  • Brass wall lamps with a variety of lampshades to suit each room (accent lighting)

If a room looks flat, then lighting might be the perfect way to bring in some added dimension.

And side lighting almost always wonders!

Don’t underestimate how much layering light can bring texture and character to a room.

Materials That Elevate

Silk or linen lampshades with metallic inner linings create a sophisticated glow.

And here’s a trick: oversized drum shades can make standard lamps look custom-made.

I’ve used this approach before – and it’s saved clients thousands on custom fixtures.

2. The 80/20 Color Rule That Actually Works

Neutral palettes risk being boring, right?

Well, not exactly – because magic happens when a splash of color is added on top.

The most sophisticated rooms follow what I would call the 80/20 principle:

80% neutral foundation, 20% strategic color.

It works pretty much every time.

For example, in our Westlake residence, we used:

  • Soft greige walls and cream upholstery (the 80%)
  • Dusty pink patterned wallpaper, high-quality textured rugs (the 20%)

Fear of color is real.

And too much color can get garish fast – it’s true.

But when well balanced, with care and know-how, color can blend and brighten a space like a dream!

Starting Points for Color-Shy Clients

Begin with these low-risk additions:

  • Leather-bound books in rich cognac tones
  • Metallic accessories in aged bronze
  • Deep jewel-toned throw pillows

According to color psychology research from the University of Texas, incorporating even small amounts of saturated color can increase feelings of energy and creativity by up to 25%.

Start small – then go bolder as you see fit.

3. Architectural Details: The Secret Sauce

Architectural details can increase a home’s perceived value by 15-20%, according to the National Association of Realtors.

That can mean thousands of dollars in perceived value from a few hundred in materials.

With that in mind, here are a few key ways to approach some pivotal architectural details that always catch my eye:

Crown Molding That Commands Attention

I’ve installed 6-inch crown molding with dental details in a 1970s ranch home.

The transformation was remarkable.

The ceilings appeared a full foot higher, and the entire room gained a custom-built quality.

Builder-grade became boutique hotel in the space of a single weekend.

Hardware: Your Home’s Jewelry

Not everything in your home needs to be expensive.

But quality matters.

And quality hardware, in particular, makes a difference you can feel.

Solid brass or oil-rubbed bronze pieces (from companies like Emtek or Rocky Mountain Hardware, for instance) transform everyday interactions with your space.

Every door you open should feel substantial.

Every drawer pull should feel intentional.

The Unexpected Trim Technique

Instead of standard white trim, we’ve been painting window and door frames in colors like Benjamin Moore’s “Wrought Iron” or “Hale Navy.”

This creates sophisticated contrast and adds architectural interest without major construction.

White trim is safe, but dark trim is memorable.

Knowing when and where to pack a color punch can make all the difference.

4. The Art of Edited Living

A study by Princeton University Neuroscience Institute found that physical clutter competes for your attention, reducing performance and increasing stress.

This is why edited, intentional styling isn’t just aesthetic.

It helps your mental well-being.

To be fair, this doesn’t mean you have to relinquish all your beloved objects in favor of total, unadulterated minimalism.

But because your brain can only process so much, it’s important to be selective about where you put your belongings.

Why in this room? Why this glass storage cabinet and not that wooden one?

Aim for gentle beauty, not chaos.

The Daily 15-Minute Reset

Every successful project we’ve completed includes built-in organization systems.

Custom drawer dividers, hidden charging stations, and designated drop zones prevent the gradual accumulation that destroys elegant spaces.

Fifteen minutes a day keeps the design decay away!

Creating Meaningful Vignettes

The rule of odd numbers isn’t arbitrary.

Our brains find odd-numbered groupings more visually appealing and memorable.

In our portfolio of luxury homes, you’ll notice we consistently group objects in threes or fives:

  • A brass lamp, stacked art books, and a sculptural object
  • Five varied-height candlesticks on a mantel
  • Three pieces of pottery in graduated sizes

Even numbers feel corporate.

Odd numbers feel curated.

5. Natural Materials Add Authentic Luxury

As humans, we value authenticity – whether we realise it or not.

Some of us more than others, sure.

But at the end of the day, natural materials are what they claim to be.

And there’s an odd but meaningful sort of comfort in that.

The global wellness design market has grown to $436 billion, according to the Global Wellness Institute, partly because people crave authentic, natural materials in their homes.

Fake wood fools no one.

Texture Combinations That Work

In our Austin projects, we’ve found these pairings create sophisticated contrast:

  • Smooth limestone with rough-hewn wood beams
  • Polished marble with woven jute
  • Honed granite with natural linen

One client gave us this feedback: “The combination of the reclaimed wood dining table with the sleek marble sideboard makes the room feel both modern and timeless.”

Contrast creates interest, while similar textures can blur to bland.

Start With These Natural Elements

  • Large pieces: Solid wood dining tables or stone fireplace surrounds
  • Medium elements: Rattan pendant lights or marble side tables
  • Small accents: Wooden bowls, stone coasters, or woven baskets

Ideally, each piece should feel like it has weight, history, presence.

You’ll see how much a statement natural piece anchors a space.

6. Large-Scale Art and Mirrors Transform Spaces

The average person hangs art 8-10 inches too low, according to gallery standards.

Professional installers follow the 57-inch rule: the center of the artwork should be about 57-60 inches from the floor.

That should land it at roughly eye level.

When art and mirrors are spaced right on the wall, the room clicks into place.

The Mirror Placement Strategy

Position large mirrors to reflect:

  • Natural light from windows
  • Beautiful architectural features
  • Carefully styled vignettes

Never place mirrors where they’ll reflect:

  • Cluttered areas
  • Bathroom doors
  • Television screens

In our Westlake project, we positioned mirrors to double the visual space and reflected the stunning natural views through the windows.

This worked well throughout the house – and was a subtle way to bring the outside in.

7. The Curtain Formula Professionals Use

Window treatments hung incorrectly can make a million-dollar home look unappetizing.

Here’s the formula we use in every project:

Measurements That Matter

  • Mount rods 4-6 inches above the window frame
  • Extend rods 10-12 inches beyond each side
  • Add 2-3 inches to length for a subtle “break” at the floor

These aren’t suggestions. They’re non-negotiables.

Fabric Choices That Elevate

Quality shows in drape and movement.

You could source from Schumacher and Kravet for their exceptional linen and silk blends that maintain their shape while creating beautiful folds.

The wrong sorts of fabric look cheap, no matter how perfectly they’re hung.

Think carefully about the weight and texture of the fabric.

Do you want it to sway in the summer breeze?

Or are you seeking some velvety, sturdy drapes?

Should the texture grab your eye, or do you want it to blend into the background?

These sorts of questions will usher you in the right direction.

8. Area Rugs: Getting the Scale Right

The number one mistake we correct?

Rugs that are too small.

A properly sized rug can make a room feel significantly larger, while an undersized rug creates visual fragmentation.

Think of it as the room’s foundation.

Too small, and everything feels unstable.

Ideally, your rug should be a subtle background, or one that colorfully ties the room together.

Size Guidelines by Room

Living Rooms: All furniture legs should sit on the rug, or at minimum, the front legs of all seating

Dining Rooms: Add 24-30 inches to each side of your table dimensions

Bedrooms: Extend 24-36 inches beyond each side of the bed

In open floor plans, we use rugs to define zones.

Our Austin project used several coordinating rugs to guide the eye and create visual zones – beneath the bed, the dining room table and chairs, and in the center of the main living room.

They brought softness to the space.

At the same time, they helped make the intentionality of our furniture placement very clear.

When in doubt, go bigger.

It’s rare that you can be too generous with a rug (unless you’re completely covering up a breathtaking hardwood floor, of course).

9. Designer Tricks That Don’t Break the Budget

You don’t need unlimited funds to achieve a high-end look.

These DIY upgrades deliver maximum impact:

Paint Transformations

We guided a client through refinishing a dated oak dresser.

Total cost: $75.

The result looked like a $3,000 custom piece.

Paint is alchemy for furniture when used well.

Hardware Updates That Matter

Switching basic knobs to unlacquered brass or matte black hardware instantly elevates furniture.

Sources like Rejuvenation and Schoolhouse offer quality options at excellent prices.

Twenty dollars can make a two-hundred-dollar dresser look like two thousand.

Picture Frame Molding Magic

Add simple molding squares to walls creates the illusion of expensive paneling.

We’ve used this technique in several Austin homes, with materials costing under $200 per room.

Flat walls are harder to latch onto visually than dimensional walls – which can be unforgettable.

10. Living Elements Bring Spaces to Life

Houseplants improve air quality – considerably so.

But beyond health benefits, plants add irreplaceable vitality to designed spaces.

A room without plants feels like a stage set or an Airbnb.

With them, it feels like a lived-in home.

Placement Strategies That Work

  • Fiddle leaf figs in empty corners create architectural interest
  • Orchids on console tables add elegance without maintenance
  • Trailing pothos on high shelves draw the eye upward

Dead corners become living focal points.

The Fresh Flower Factor

Weekly fresh flowers might seem extravagant, but consider this:

A $15 grocery store bouquet, properly arranged, can make your coffee table into a showpiece.

If that price is too steep for only a week of luxury, consider dried flowers or Eucalyptus leaves, which last longer.

11. Vertical Space Creates Drama

Rooms with well-used vertical space feel larger than those with furniture clustered at ground level.

This psychological effect, studied by environmental psychologists at UC Berkeley, explains why tall bookshelves and gallery walls create such impact.

Keep those eyes up.

Gallery Wall Guidelines

Start at eye level (57 inches from floor to center) and build upward.

Mix frame sizes but maintain consistent spacing (2-3 inches between pieces).

You can even do this on a smaller scale – using shelves and just a couple of smaller pieces.

We creaeted a display like this in our Mid-Atlantic project that became the perfect focal point for a nook beside the study’s desk.

One wall.

A couple of frames.

Infinite compliments and plenty to look at!

Built-In Bookshelf Trick

Paint tall bookshelves the same color as walls for a custom, architectural look.

This technique saved one client thousands on custom millwork while achieving the same visual effect.

Why pay for built-ins when paint can get the job done just as well?

12. Maintenance Systems That Preserve Beauty

After completing hundreds of projects, we’ve learned that design without maintenance planning fails within months.

The most elegant homes stay that way through invisible systems.

Beautiful spaces need backstage support.

Essential Daily Habits

  • Morning surface wipe-downs (2 minutes)
  • Evening 10-minute reset
  • Weekly deep clean of one room (rotating schedule)

Twelve minutes daily beats four hours weekly.

Beautiful Storage Solutions

Invest in attractive containers that complement your decor:

  • Leather document boxes for mail
  • Woven baskets for throws
  • Lacquered trays for remotes

Clutter hidden beautifully is still beautiful.

The Hidden Infrastructure

In our luxury home projects, we always include:

  • Built-in charging stations
  • Concealed cord management
  • Dedicated storage for cleaning supplies

Good design considers the mundane, while great design makes it invisible.
