Design Ideas to Refresh Your Space for Spring
Spring cleaning, spring fever—we all associate this time of year with a certain excitement and energy. And it makes sense: as plants and flowers come back into bloom all around us, we feel the surge, which translates into the desire to reinvigorate our homes with a sense of newness.
If you’re feeling the urge to transform your interiors from winter haven to warm weather retreat, here are some design ideas to refresh your space for the season.
Reduce and Recycle
When it comes to our homes, what we most often think of first in spring is spring cleaning. Even if you dread the task, it’s hard to deny how good it feels once you’ve finished and your home is organized and sparkling. But rather than focus on the scrubbing and mopping, I recommend paring down your possessions; it’s like ridding yourself of unnecessary winter weight!
Conduct a complete overhaul room by room, getting rid of anything that’s outdated, wasting space, or going unused. This can include unwanted or ill-fitting clothing, old books/magazines/movies, unused gadgets and decor items that are collecting dust, etc. Once you’re finished, bag or box everything up and take it to a local charity or recycle drop-off. Once home, you’ll feel a sense of lightness and relief, and the lack of clutter will make your home look more like a magazine spread than ever before.
Try a Wallpaper Accent Wall
Don’t worry, I’m not talking about the drab florals and chintzy borders of your grandmother’s home or a dusty B&B. Today’s wallpaper is a fresh update of easy-on-the-eyes geometrics, whimsical patterns, interesting textures, and of course fun and sophisticated florals. Instead of covering each wall in the room, designate one wall to accent. Not only will it add an element of visual interest, but it will also draw the eye, making it the new focal point of your space. The combination of luminous jungle greens on a stately black background shown above is a perfect example of how to balance sophistication and fun. To keep it feeling light and springy, choose bright colors and fun patterns to energize the room—and your mood!
Add Colorful and Air-purifying Houseplants
With a dizzying array of sweet-smelling plants and colors in bloom, it’s no wonder we crave spending time outdoors in the spring. And with the abundant sunshine, there’s no better time to fill your home with as many plants as you can fit—or can remember to water.
Hang ivy or ferns in trendy macrame planters or line a sunny window with pots of bright-light seeking plants where they can thrive. If you want more splashes of color, violets and hibiscus do well in full light and add a vibrant punch to any room. Best of all, your plants will purify the air—one NASA experiment even proved that indoor houseplants can rid your space of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde and benzene that can cause cancer! I can definitely get on board with that.
Give Your Patio or Deck a Makeover
After all the harsh winds and rain of the long winter months, your patio or deck has surely seen some better days. But now that the warm weather is begging you to spend more time outside, you can finally give your outdoor space the attention it deserves.
Give it a good cleaning, and make sure to restain old wood or furniture for an instant facelift. Add some comfortable seating, along with pillows in bright colors and fun patterns for a pop of color. Lay down an outdoor rug for a weatherproof yet homey touch. Consider a water feature, like a small fountain, to add calming and relaxing sounds to your outdoor space. And of course, fill up the area with plants of all shapes and colors. Your outdoor space is an extension of your home, so make sure to incorporate the touches that will make it a relaxing spot you want to retreat to as much as possible—preferably with some good friends and a glass of wine!
